What the number means

Kelvin temperature describes the color of white light. Low numbers burn amber and warm, like a filament bulb or candlelight. High numbers read blue white, like midday sun. Nothing about the number is quality or brightness; a 2700K and a 5000K lamp can put out identical light. It is purely the color of the white.

Room by room, what we actually install

2700K, warm white: living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms. It flatters wood tones, warm paint colors, and people. If a room is where you wind down, this is the default.

3000K, soft white: kitchens, hallways, entries, most baths. Warm enough to feel like home, clean enough to work under. When a whole house wants one answer, this is usually it.

3500K to 4000K, neutral to cool white: laundry rooms, offices, garages, closets where color accuracy matters. Task light. Crisp, honest, and cold if you use it where people relax.

5000K, daylight: shops, security lighting, detail work. It matches the Arizona sun outside your window, which is exactly why it feels wrong on a living room ceiling at 9pm.

The three mistakes we get called to fix

Mixing temperatures in one sightline: a 2700K lamp next to a 4000K can in the same room reads as a mistake from the doorway. Chasing brightness with coolness: a dim room needs more lumens or more cans, not bluer light. And trusting the box photo: the same 3000K reads differently over white quartz than over dark cabinets, which is why we bring samples and burn them in place before committing a whole ceiling.
